Children’s dentistry requires a unique approach. It is critical to ensure that children are comfortable visiting their dentist. Our dentists have the experience and qualifications to care for a child’s teeth, gums, and mouth throughout the various stages of childhood.
Children begin to get their baby teeth during the first 6 months of life. By age 6 or 7 years, they start to lose their first set of teeth, which eventually are replaced by secondary, permanent teeth. Without proper dental care, children face possible oral decay and disease that can cause a lifetime of pain and complications. Today, early childhood dental caries—an infectious disease—is 5 times more common in children than asthma and 7 times more common than hay fever. Although most people associate gum disease with adults, many children inherit these problems as well. Diet and other factors can play a role in periodontal disease but often treatment is necessary.
Florida Smiles Dental recommends seeing children for the first time around the age of three years old. This is important to ensure that the primary teeth are in a healthy condition and allows the dentist to detect any potential gum problems. Of course, if there are concerns prior to that age, we will be happy to examine and consult with you.
During a first children’s dentistry visit, we will show your child around the exam room and explain what will happen during their exam. We can answer any questions they may have to help them to better understand the importance of their examination. After they take a seat in the dental chair, we will carefully count their teeth and one of the dentists on the Florida Smiles Dental team will check for cavities. If we find any, we can treat the area with a natural-colored filling.
