Most people make the assumption that the alternative to braces, Invisalign, is superior in only aesthetics. While Invisalign does make the process of straightening teeth less noticeable, the technology involved is an impressive orthodontic advancement. Understanding more about how Invisalign works may make the choice between nearly invisible aligners and metal braces easier to make.
Invisalign is a process for straightening teeth using clear “aligners.”
First, aligners are precisely measured trays fitting over your teeth to incrementally move the bite and dental structure into proper alignment.
Then the impressions and scans of teeth are made and sent to specialized dental engineers to measure aligners against the amount of movement needed to align your teeth.
When you consult with your dentist about using Invisalign, ask to see the ClinCheck simulation which demonstrates the 2 week intervals with each aligner leading up to the final result a patient can expect to see at the end of the process.
Thanks to the technology involved, asking your Invisalign dentist how long it will take to straighten your teeth should provide you with an accurate time frame provided instructions of use are followed.
In some cases, particularly if a tooth requires lowering or rotating, the aligner trays may include tooth-colored attachments. While these attachments may be accompanied with initial discomfort and make the trays more noticeable, patients typically benefit from how these attachments may accelerate the process of straightening teeth.
Braces have been around longer than Invisalign and have more data and precedent backing their use for successful teeth straightening. Braces are basically metal brackets bonded to teeth with a longer wire inserted through each one. Once per month, patients must visit their orthodontist to have this wire tightened. Most orthodontists have small rubber bands in multiple colors to customize the look of the braces. This might feel unprofessional or juvenile for adults in need of teeth straightening.
Beyond the potentially painful, sharp metal edges and colored bands, any history of gum issues or other pre-existing dental issues may rule out braces as an option. Braces also restrict food choices to avoid damaging all the hardware lodged in the mouth.
Choosing to sign up for an Invisalign consultation with your specialist in Pompano Beach office will result in your use of removable plastic trays which are built ahead of time reducing the number of dental visits required.
It is recommended to wear the trays at least 20 hours per day, but, you have the option to remove the trays for eating as well as flossing and brushing your teeth. If you have a meeting for which you would rather remove the aligners, you have that option available to you whereas braces are bonded directly to the teeth and always noticeable.
When you choose Invisalign trays in Pompano Beach, they double as protective gear and/or the perfect whitening trays designed especially for you.
The cost of Invisalign is similar to braces, but, it varies from case to case and whether or not a patient’s dental insurance will cover a portion of the procedure. Depending on the length of time needed to align your teeth and how well you follow instructions of use, the range is from $1,500 – $8,000.
While it is possible for some patients to have an allergic reaction to the aligners, this is extremely rare and a quality Invisalign specialis will refund your investment if you are in this tiny percentage of patients.
Invisalign is much less painful for teeth straightening than braces. Patients report soreness with Invisalign whereas braces patients occasionally cut the inside of their mouths on the sharp brackets. Invisalign is also less likely to cause gum inflammation than braces. An unpleasant side effect of braces is root resorption, which occurs when part or all of tooth structure is lost. Invisalign has not yet been connected to causing this condition.
When attempting to talk with the aligners in the mouth, some patients may speak with a slight lisp. After a period of time, possibly 2 – 3 days, patients grow accustomed to the feel of aligners and it may become easier to speak naturally as the mouth structure changes. As the aligners are removable, one can always take them out for speaking engagements or other events and simply place them back in afterwards.
The cleaning regimen of using the aligners has reportedly caused some patients to lose weight. It is important to clean teeth between meals, making many patients think twice before reaching for a snack.
There is no age requirement for using Invisalign; successful straightening has been witnessed by patients as young as 12 as well as senior citizens. What may change based on age is the amount of time the Invisalign treatment may take and how many hours are recommended for the patient to wear the aligners. Younger patients may have more wiggle room whereas Invisalign patients over 50 may need to wear aligners for 20 hours a day over a longer period of time (possibly 24 or more months as opposed to 10 or 12). As people age, the capacity to change bone structure in the mouth tends to decrease.
