Orthodontist at Florida Smiles Dental in Ft. Lauderdale and Lighthouse Point
Dr. Donald Fox is a board-certified orthodontist who provides his services at both Florida Smiles Dental locations: Ft. Lauderdale and Lighthouse Point. Dr. Fox has a Master of Science degree in Orthodontics, as well as Dentofacial Orthopedics. Dentofacial orthopedics provides dental braces that straighten the teeth and jaws and the allow the ability to change the shape, length and width of the jaws of the face. This can be performed non-surgically on patients as young as age seven or in the teenage and adult years with non-surgical and surgical methods.
Orthodontic treatments like braces help move teeth that are crooked or that do not fit together right. By fixing these problems, orthodontics can also help keep your mouth healthy. Crooked teeth can be harder to clean, putting you at risk for cavities and gum disease.
Using x-rays and other tools, your dental professional will decide if orthodontic treatments are right for you.
The best age to begin orthodontic treatment is between 10 and 14. This is when a child’s head and mouth are still growing and teeth are easier to straighten, but patients can get braces at any age. In fact, more and more adults are getting braces.
Orthodontic treatments with braces can move teeth that are crooked or that do not fit together right. Practicing good oral care while wearing braces helps protect your teeth and gums. It can also cut down on the amount of time you need to wear braces.
Using tools like floss threaders, interdental brushes, and electric toothbrushes specifically designed for orthodontics can help maintain proper oral health during treatment.
While orthodontics entails the management of tooth movement, dentofacial orthopedics involves the guidance of facial growth and facial development, which occurs for the most part during childhood, and is a reason why kids are often the best candidates for receiving dentofacial orthopedic therapy.
Dr. Fox will examine and monitor your child’s growth to determine when starting treatment will be most effective. If your child begins orthodontic treatment before his or her adult teeth have erupted, it is known as Phase-One treatment. During this phase, Dr. Fox will use treatments designed to correct your child’s jaw growth and make sure that the jaw bone is properly aligned before beginning the next phase of treatment, which usually involves placing braces to straighten your child’s teeth.
Dentofacial orthopedics is also used to treat adult patients at Florida Smiles Dental in Ft. Lauderdale and Lighthouse Point. Sometimes, adult treatment may involve surgery. With our younger patients, we know the jaw bones are still forming, making it easier for our team at the office of to control bone growth and tooth movement. Adults, however, are a different story; their bones are no longer growing, and their jaw bones have hardened, so it is more difficult to adjust the bite and move teeth into proper alignment.
