Oral Hygiene

Posted on 5/1/2020 by Florida Smiles Dental
woman brushing her teethAccording to our dentist in Plantation, FL, simply sticking to the “brush twice daily” rule may not be enough to keep your teeth clean and healthy. After all, you need strong teeth to last a lifetime! Here is some advice to keep in mind the next time you start your usual teeth brushing routine.

Use A Timer

Our knowledgeable dentist in Plantation, FL, says most people don’t spend enough time brushing – you should spend about two minutes to thoroughly clean all the surfaces and crevices of your teeth. Some electric toothbrushes are equipped with a two-minute timer, or you could set a timer on your smart phone, suggests our Plantation dentist.

Improve Brushing & Flossing

The most effective way to clean your teeth is to hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums, and use short back and forth strokes across the sides and tops of your teeth, says our dentist in Plantation. Then, hold your brush vertically and use several strokes to work on the backs of your teeth – especially focusing on your front top and bottom teeth where plaque tends to collect.

Your flossing method may also be falling short, advises our dentist in Plantation, FL. You should use a piece of dental floss measuring about 18 inches long, which allows you to use a fresh area of floss for every few teeth. Instead of just inserting the floss back and forth between each tooth, a more effective method is to wrap the floss around each tooth to more thoroughly remove trapped bacteria.

Keep Up With Your Check-Ups

Prevention is the best cure! At your 6-month checkup, our dentist will thoroughly clean your teeth AND check for cavities, plaque and any other dental issues that need to be addressed before they worsen.
