Healthy Food For Teeth

Posted on 6/1/2020 by Florida Smiles Dental
tray of foodMost of us know that in order to have healthy teeth, you have to brush and floss daily, plus see your dentist on a regular basis. Our Brickell FL dentist does recommend having your teeth cleaned every six months, but there are also many at-home steps you can take to keep your teeth in great shape between office visits.

LEARN ABOUT TEETH-FRIENDLY FOODS FROM OUR BRICKELL FL DENTIST

One of the biggest contributors to oral health is your diet, and luckily this is something that’s within your control. According to our Brickell dentist, there are certain foods and drinks that promote clean, strong teeth – and others that should be avoided or limited.

#1 – EAT CALCIUM-RICH & CRUNCHY FOODS

Milk, eggs and other dairy products are foods rich in calcium and vitamin D, which makes them great for strengthening your teeth. Yogurt, low-fat cheese, and meat are also options that contain calcium and phosphorus (a mineral that preserves tooth enamel). If you wish to avoid dairy or meat products, you can get the same elements from green, leafy vegetables, like broccoli and kale. Carrots and celery also offer vitamins necessary for good health, plus their crunch helps keep your teeth surfaces clean.

#2 – AVOID ACIDS AND SUGARS

It goes without saying that eating a sugar-loaded diet is not only detrimental to your overall health, but it can also have quite an impact on your teeth. Sugar can cause cavities and promote the growth of bacteria, two things you don’t want in your mouth.

Acidic foods, like tomatoes and citrus fruit, cause erosion of your tooth enamel and tooth decay. Coffee, some iced teas, and red wine contain multiple harmful acids and can also stain your teeth. Soda is another beverage that causes tooth erosion and decay, so our Brickell dentist recommends limiting your consumption as much as possible. If you do consume sugary or acidic food, it’s a good idea to brush your teeth afterward. This will help your teeth stay clean and free from any harmful elements.

STAY ON TOP OF YOUR ORAL HEALTH WITH OUR BRICKELL FL DENTIST

Of course, there are numerous other ways to care for your teeth at home. Drinking plenty of water and chewing sugar-free gum, for example, also contribute to your overall oral health. Brushing and flossing daily, along with a proper diet and regular visits to our Brickell dentist will help your teeth stay in optimal shape.
