Pregnancy Dental Tips

Posted on 5/2/2021 by Florida Smiles Dental
Pregnant WomanOral health may not be the first big change that comes to mind during pregnancy, but it is certainly on the list. Our Pompano Beach FL dentist affirms your dental hygiene routine is important to maintain for both your health and your baby’s well being. Consider these tips from our 5-star dentist in Pompano Beach to help ensure your healthiest smile throughout your pregnancy.

TIP #1 – COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR DENTIST

If you are pregnant or even think you are pregnant, let your dentist know. Also, be sure to communicate any mediations or prenatal vitamins you are taking, so your dentist can have the most comprehensive understanding of your needs.

TIP #2 – POSTPONE X-RAYS

Dental x-rays are often not of immediate concern when coming in for routine cleanings and check-ups. If your dentist needs an updated x-ray for your file, let your dentist know you are pregnant, and an x-ray can be postponed until after delivery. If an x-ray is necessary in an emergency circumstance, your dentist will take every precaution to ensure the x-ray is as safe as possible.

TIP #3 – MAINTAIN YOUR BRUSHING & FLOSSING ROUTINE

Practicing good oral hygiene habits is more important than ever when pregnant. Increased hormones often affect the gums and heighten a woman’s chance of gingivitis. “Pregnancy gingivitis” may cause gums to bleed or swell when you floss or brush, but if left untreated it may lead to more serious forms of gingivitis.

Tooth decay is also often increased during pregnancy too. An increased carb intake can add more sugars to the mouth, and morning sickness can also cause heightened levels of acid. Both can be destructive to your enamel if brushing and flossing do not counteract them.

TIP #4 – VISIT THE DENTIST MORE OFTEN

Your Pompano Beach dentist may recommend visiting the office every 4 months instead of every 6 during pregnancy to keep a closer eye on your mouth. Cavities may increase during pregnancy, which means more bacteria build-up as well. Therefore, to minimize damage and bacteria, more frequent cleanings can be beneficial.

TIP #5 – USE ALCOHOL-FREE MOUTHWASH

Many mouthwashes contain alcohol as a cleaning agent, so be sure to peek at what you have at home! If your mouthwash contains alcohol, you can purchase an alcohol-free or “zero alcohol” mouthwash at most stores. Just look for the label!
