Dental Crown
Fort Lauderdale, FL

Rendering of jaw with dental crown.A dental crown is nothing more than a tooth-shaped cover. It is used to cover a tooth and to restore it to its original shape, to restore its strength and to repair it if damaged. It is a total coverage of the tooth. When placed on the tooth, the dental crowns completely cover it, up to the gum. It is a type of dental prosthesis necessary for different situations. To understand whether it is necessary or not, all you have to do is come to us at Florida Smiles Dental.

When is the Dental Crown Needed?

The most important clinical cases in which dental crowns are used are three: to protect a weak tooth and not break it (or to prevent parts of a broken tooth from falling apart); to be able to restore a broken tooth or a very worn tooth; if a tooth has a very large filling, with little real tooth left, to protect it. Dental crowns are also used to hold dental bridges in place, for purely aesthetic modifications, to cover a deformed tooth, to cover discolored teeth or to cover a dental implant.

More rarely, crowns are also used on children's primary teeth. It is almost always a matter of protection: to be able to save a tooth extremely damaged by caries, so much that it cannot be filled; to cover the teeth of a child very at risk of caries; to avoid or reduce the use of general anesthesia on children. In these cases, a stainless steel crown is usually used.

The Most Common Types of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are used in different materials, as needed. Stainless steel is used for temporary adult or children's crowns. Crowns in other metal alloys are composed of alloys of common metals or with high quantities of gold or platinum. They are used for internal molars, those that are not seen, as they are fixed and metallic in color. Then there are porcelain and metal crowns, so that they can be combined with the colors of the teeth. The problem with these crowns is that they can wear out opposite teeth more quickly and can chip.

Fully resin crowns are much cheaper than the previous ones, but they also wear out much faster and can break even more easily than metal and porcelain crowns. Finally, there are the crowns entirely in porcelain or all in ceramic, they can be better adapted than all the others to the colors of the teeth and are excellent for those who are allergic to metal.

Problems With Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are necessary in some cases, but they can also lead to problems: they could increase the sensitivity of the tooth; they could be chipped; you may lose them because the cement wears out or they may fall because the tooth underneath has worn out even more.

However, these are problems that can be solved. For every need, call 754-354-0363 so that we at Florida Smiles Dental can solve your problems, dispel your doubts, or check if you need a crown or not.
