Considering braces is an important part of your dental care journey, and we want to ensure you have the information and support you need to make an informed decision. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions and what you need to know about getting braces.
What Are Braces?
Braces are orthodontic devices. They’re used to correct misaligned bites and teeth, improving the function of the teeth and jaw.
The way braces work is by applying pressure to the teeth and jaw over time. With that pressure, it is possible to shift the teeth out of their original position without damaging them.
Some of the issues that braces are able to correct include:
- Overbites
- Underbites
- Crossbites
- Gaps between the teeth
- Crowded teeth
- Crooked teeth
- Misalignment of the jaw
What Are the Benefits of Getting Braces?
There are many reasons you can benefit from getting braces. Braces can do more than straighten your teeth; they can also offer functional and cosmetic benefits.
Braces are able to:
- Change the look of the teeth and put them into proper alignment. This cosmetic change can help you feel more confident around others.
- Correct problems with your bite. If you have an overbite, underbite, open bite, or crossbite, braces can help realign your jaw and prevent unnecessary stress.
- Improve your speech. When you have a misaligned jaw or crooked teeth, your speech can be affected. Correcting these issues may help you speak more clearly.
- Help align the teeth so you chew more effectively, so you can digest more easily.
- Save you money; when your jaw and teeth are aligned, the jaw joint is less likely to cause you problems, and your teeth will be easier to clean and take care of.
Are There Different Kinds of Braces?
Yes, there are several different kinds of braces. Some of them include:
- Metal braces, which are the most traditional style. These use metal brackets and wires to adjust the teeth and bite.
- Ceramic braces, which are similar to metal braces but have clear or tooth-color brackets instead of metal brackets. These are less noticeable.
- Lingual braces, which go on the back side of the teeth.
- Clear aligner trays, such as Invisalign. These braces are clear and unnoticeable, which many adults like. They are typically worn for 20 to 22 hours each day, and a new tray is used each time an additional adjustment is needed.
The different types of braces may work in various situations, so it’s best to have a consultation and discuss your goals and treatment needs with your dental provider. For some people, metal braces may be the only option, while others may find that aligner trays are sufficient on their own.
How Much Will I Spend on Braces?
The amount you will spend on braces will depend on the kind of braces you decide to get, how long you have to wear them, and other factors. Overall, the general cost is usually between $3,000 and $7,000, but Invisalign can be less (or more) at between $1,800 and $9,500.
As you decide which kind of braces are right for you, our team will discuss financing options with you. Keep in mind that you may be able to save more on certain types of braces, like Invisalign, if you have minor adjustments to make, versus if you need lingual braces that are out of sight for more significant adjustments.
Many people pay for braces over the period of treatment, which can help make them more affordable. Others pay for them upfront. Your insurance may cover some or all of the cost of braces, depending on the treatment plan; we can help you find out more from your insurance provider so you know what to expect throughout the treatment plan.
What Is the Treatment Process for Braces?
The treatment process for braces will be different based on the kind of braces you decide to get. To give you a general idea, here is what to expect with traditional braces.
- You’ll go to your initial consultation. At your consultation, you will talk to your orthodontist and dentistry team about your ideas and goals for your dental health. They will also assess your teeth and bite to determine which kinds of braces you can get. At that time, you may have X-rays, impressions, or digital scans taken, as well.
- You’ll get the braces. Next, you will have the braces installed. The brackets will be b
- onded to the front of the teeth with traditional braces. Then, they will be connected with wires. Some require rubber bands, as well, if the jaw needs to be realigned.
- You’ll come in for regular adjustments. About every couple of weeks, you’ll visit our team to have your braces adjusted. You’ll do this throughout your treatment plan and until your teeth reach the final position.
- You’ll have regular cleanings and maintain your oral care. It’s important to brush and floss regularly with braces. We will also perform cleanings to prevent staining or the buildup of plaque.
- You’ll get your braces off. Once your teeth reach their final position, you will get the braces removed. The teeth will be cleaned and polished.
- Finally, you’ll get a retainer. This should be worn regularly to keep your teeth from shifting out of place. Typically, a retainer is worn full-time initially, but it may later be used only at night.
